Potisk Chiropractic and Wellness Center and the South Milwaukee Public Library will be presenting a series of wellness programs. Tuesday, December 9 at 6:30 pm Dr. Neville will give a talk on conquering colds and flu. Monday, January 12, 2009 at 6:30 pm Dr. Scheuing will talk on treating and managing chronic pain. Monday, January 19 at 12 noon Dr. Neville will give a talk on weight loss: making your health a priority.The programs run about 45 minutes and are free. They will be held in the second floor meeting room 1. Call the reference desk at 768-8195, ext 2 to register.
The Friends are having their fall book sale on Saturday, November 22 from 9:30-3. Their next book sale will be on Monday, December 1 from 9:30-11. Great bargains! Hey kids! On Wednesday, January 14 Mad Science will be back to do a science program on the “wacky winter”. The program will be at 4 pm at the library. Program is free, but limited to 30 children. Call 768-8195, ext 3 to register.
The Library will be closed on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, November 27 and Friday, November 28. The Library will be open on Saturday, November 29 from 9 am to 4 pm. The Christmas family story night will be held on Tuesday, December 2 from 6:30-7:45. There will be stories and a visit with Santa. The South Milwaukee Public Library Board of Trustees and Staff would like to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Library Foundation’s wine tasting on October 17th. It was very successful. Mark your calendars for October 16, 2009 for their annual wine tasting.
The South Milwaukee Public Library Foundation would like to thank everyone who bid on the silent auction items. A special thanks to everyone who donated items for the auction.
The fall story time will begin on Tuesday, November 11. The story time is at 10:30 am. Call 768-8195 ext. 3 to register or register in person in the youth room. Never too early to think about Christmas decorations, entertainment ideas or for those special gifts that can you make. Check out the library collection of books for ideas to make the holidays special.
The Library will be closed on Thursday, November 27 for Thanksgiving and on Friday, November 28. The Library will be open on Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm.
Starting in January, 2009, the library will open every day, including Saturdays, at 9 AM. Check out the library’s web site at www.southmilwaukee.org/library for our calendar of events, hours, and our on line book club.

The South Milwaukee Public Library Foundation, Inc. is holding its annual wine tasting on Friday, October 17, 2008 fro 7 – 9:30 PM at the Library. Tickets are $20 per person. They are available at Parkway Floral, M&I Bank South Milwaukee, the circulation desk at the library. Tickets may also be purchased at the door on Friday evening.
Stop in and put in your bid on items that are on display for the silent auction. The auction will run through Friday, October 24th. Bidding will close at 3 PM on the 24th.
The library will be holding its Halloween family fun night on Tuesday evening, October 21 from 6 PM to 7:45 PM. See Glen the magician perform his Halloween magic show. There will be crafts for the kids as well as cookies and punch.
Need costume ideas for Halloween. Check out the library’s collection of books on costumes and Halloween party ideas.

The library now has a new public black and white copier. Funds for the copier were from the library’s gift fund. We want to thank all of you who donate to the library.
Book memorials are a wonderful way to honor a friend for some special occasion or to remember a person who has passed away. Book plates are placed in the book acknowledging the memorial donation. Join us on Tuesday, October 21 from 6 – 7:45 PM as we have our annual Halloween fun night. We will have a magician who will perform his magic on children as well as face painting and crafts. The Library Board will serve cookies and punch. Children and adults are encouraged to come in costume!
The Friends will be holding their Monday morning book sale on October 6th from 9:30-11. Lots of great bargains! Thank you to everyone who has donated items for the book sale. Items may be dropped off at the circulation desk during business hours.
The South Milwaukee Lions Club donated a magnifier reader to the library. If you are having problems reading the small print, this reader will be of great help. The reader is located in the reference area.
Day care centers are encouraged to contact the Youth Room to arrange for a visit to the library. Call 768-8195, ext 3 to make arrangements.
The tickets for the South Milwaukee Public Library Foundations annual wine tasting party are available. Cost is $20 per person. The wine tasting will be held on Friday, October 17 from 7 - 9:30 pm. Tickets may be purchased at the library, Parkway Floral, M&I Bank or at the door on the night of the event.

The Friends of the Library will be holding their fall book sale on Saturday, September 20, 2008 from 9:30-3. Great selection of books and other materials. If you wish to donate books, records, puzzles, etc. you may bring them into the library circulation desk.
The art gallery on the second floor has an interesting display of unique Wisconsin locale nature photography by Rozanne Cifaldi and the watercolor translation of the photography by Elizabeth Cifaldi. The display will run from September 7 through Tickets are now on sale at the Library, Parkway Floral and M&I Bank – South Milwaukee for the Library’s annual wine tasting, which will be held on Friday, October 17th from 7 – 9:30 pm. Tickets are $20 per person. Tickets will be available at the door as well. There will also be a silent auction. All funds raised support library activities.
Mad Science will do a program on Wednesday, September 17th from 4-5. Advance registration required as the class is limited to 30 children. Call 768-8195 ext.3

Summer is almost over. Children will be going back to school shortly. Check out the library’s book display on the firs floor on preparing your child for school.
In honor of the Harley Davidson 105th anniversary, we have prepared a book display of books on Harley Davidson. Very interesting reading!
Congratulations to the 515 children who participated in the 2008 summer reading program. Miss Denise will post the top readers from each school in the Youth Room.
The fall story time will start on Tuesday, September 2. Story time will be at 10:30 pm. You may start to register children on Monday, August 18 either in person or call 768-8195, ext 3.
We will be having a special program featuring the Mad Science group on Wednesday afternoon, September 17 from 4-5 pm. Kids will learn how to make polymers. Registration is required since the class is limited to 30. People who register and do not show up, unless they call and cancel, will be assed a $2.00 fee.
Color copies are only 50 cents. Our copier makes great copies of photographs. We are looking for presenters for our fall adult programs. Have a hobby that you would like to share with us, call the Library Director at 768-8195.

NEW: The library will be closed on Saturday, July 26, 2008. Materials may be retuned in the book drop located to the north of the main entrance.
The library is open during road construction. Park in the city lot next to the library or on the side street.
Hey Kids! There is still time to join the reading club. For the readers, read 300 minutes and you get prizes and a book. For the younger children, if you are read to for 250 minutes you can get prizes and a book. The program ends on Saturday, July 26th. However, you can still turn in your sheets and be eligible for prizes until Saturday, August 2.
September is library card sign up month. Library cards are free and it only takes a few minutes to register for a card. You need two pieces of identification, one of which has your current address. Stop in and check us out!
Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children. Studies show that children who are read to in the home, or who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime continuing education. For adults the library is a source for continuing life long learning.
We are looking for people from the community who would like to present programs at the library. Call the Library Director at 768-8195 if you are interested in sharing your hobby with the library.
The library has a number of books that were donated to the library over the years that we would like to sell on E-Bay. We are looking for volunteers who would be willing to enter them on E-Bay. If you are interested, please call the Library Director at 768-8195.

Yes, summer time is here. Road construction is taking place in front of the library. We are open for business. There is ample parking in the lot or the side streets.
Summer is a time for grilling outdoors. Check out our display on barbecuing. Some of the titles you will find include The Great BBQ Sauce Book, The Barbecue Bible with over 500 Recipes, The Tailgater’s Cookbook, and The New Grilling Book.
Hey Kids! Have you signed up for the summer reading program? There is still time to “Catch the Reading Bug”. Lots of good prizes and programs.
With the cost of magazine subscriptions going up, why not check out the library’s collection of magazines. They circulate for one week. We have over 200 magazines to choose from.
Have a hobby that you might want to share with others? We are working on programs for the fall/winter. If you would like to do a program call the Library Director. We will do all of the publicity.
With the high cost of gas, you may want to stay close to home. Check out the library’s collection on summer recreation ideas.

My how time flies. Summer is almost here. Time to start getting the yard in shape and planning those family picnics. Check out the library’s collection of gardening and cook books.
“Catch the Reading Bug” is the theme for the 2008 reading program. Be sure to pick up a brochure at the library that lists all of the fun things kids can do this summer. The program begins on Monday June 16 and runs through Saturday, July 26th. There is also a listing of the programs on the library’s calendar of events on the website, www.southmilwaukee.org/library.
The summer hours of the library begin on Monday, June 16. The hours will remain the same as in the winter except that the Youth Room will close at noon on Saturdays. The Library will be closed on Friday, July 4th and will reopen on Saturday, July 5.
The Youth Room is looking for volunteers to help with the reading program. If you are interested in volunteering you should call Miss Denise at 768-8195 ext 3.
Reading a good book and would like to share a review. E-mail your review to bob.pfeiffer@mcfls.org and we will post it on the blog.
Interested in joining a book discussion group? Stop in the second Thursday of each month at 1 pm for a stimulating book discussion. Check with the adult reference desk to see what book they are reading that month.

April shows bring May flowers! Everyone is ready for spring. Check out the library’s extensive flower and vegetable gardening as well as lawn care. Some suggested titles are: Instant gardens: High-Impact Makeovers that look great right now, Ortho’s al about the easiest flowers to grow, Basic gardening illustrated, Complete guide to vegetables, fruits & herbs, Vegetable gardener’s bible, Container gardening for dummies, Organic law care manual, and All about lawns. These are just a few of the titles you will find at the South Milwaukee Library.
The spring story time begins on April 1 at 10:30 am. Still time to register! Call 768-8195 or stop in and register in the Youth Room Don’t forget to vote on April 1st. The polls are open from 7 AM to 8 PM
The South Milwaukee Library has state and federal tax forms. We also have the reproducible for you to copy. You can also get the tax forms on the Wisconsin Department of Revenue and Internal Revenue web sites.
National Library Week is April 13-19. April 14 is our Monday night family story time at 6:30 PM. Registration is not required. April 15 is our library family fun night starting at 6:30 PM. Mark Nilsen the magician will be performing his magic, activities for the kids and the Library Board will be serving ice cream. On Saturday, April 19th the Friends will be having their spring book sale from 9:30-3. Great bargains!

The South Milwaukee Public Library Foundation, Inc. is conducting a silent auction. Stop in and see the items that are available for bidding. The auction will run from Thursday, January 23 through Saturday, February 9th. Stop in often to check on your bid. The winning bids will be notified on Monday, February 11th. All donations are tax deductible.
The library has the popular federal and state tax forms. Forms not available at the library can be obtained from the IRS and Wisconsin Department of Revenue web sites.
Remember the next Monday morning book sale will be on February 4, 2008. Stop in and see the bargains.
Our next Monday night family story time will be Monday, February 11 starting at 6:30 pm. Bring the whole family for a great night of stories and games. Registration not required.
Hey kids! There still is time to register for the Milwaukee Bucks Reading Challenge program. Read 500 pages and you get a voucher for a free ticket to the Milwaukee Bucks basketball game. Hurry though, the program ends on February 22.
Looking for something to do this winter? The library has a display of books and videos on winter sports. Learn how to ski or ice skate.
Winter is a great time to think about those home decorating projects. The check out the library’s collection of home decorating ideas.
A big thanks to all those who volunteered to read to the 4th graders in the public and private schools as part of the library’s Martin Luther King, Jr. read in.

On behalf of the South Milwaukee Public Library Board of Trustees and the Staff I would like to wish all of you a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy new year. The Library will be closed on Monday, December 31 and Tuesday, January 1. We will reopen on Wednesday at 9:30 am and resume our normal schedule. Registration for the winter story time session begins on January 2nd. Story time will begin on Tuesday, January 15th at 10:30 am. This year we will have only one session of story time as the attendance has declined for the afternoon sessions. This year we will do a Monday evening family story time. It will be held on the second Monday of each month-January through May. There will be stories by Miss Denise and other activities. The first one will be Monday, January 14 at 6:30 PM. Bids have been awarded to replace the 44 year old air conditioning unit at the library. The new unit is expected to be in operation by March. The new unit will be much more energy efficient. We are advertising for an evening page. This person must be 18 years old or older and a South Milwaukee resident. The evening pages work 16 hours per week and every other Saturday. Apply at the reference or circulation desk. Applications must be completed in the library. Each year the Library sponsors the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. read in. Volunteers from the community go into the fourth grades of the public and private schools and read a book on civil rights. The volunteers select books from a collection prepared by the Youth Services Library. This year the read in will be held the week of January 21. Anyone interested should contact the Youth Services Librarian at 768-8195, ext. 3 Our first Monday book sale will be held on Monday, January 7th from 9:30-11 am. In the event of a snow storm or library closed, the Book Cellar will be closed. Enjoy talking about books. The Thursday afternoon book club meetings the second Thursday of each month at 1 pm. Call the reference desk to find out which book they are currently reading. The South Milwaukee Public Library will continue to accept reserves on DVD’s, VHS tapes and music CD’s from anywhere in the county. South Milwaukee residents will no longer be able to reserve the above items from the Milwaukee Public Library. They will, however, be able to go to the Milwaukee Public Library agencies and check out those items. PLEASE, if you reserve something and no longer want it, call the library to cancel your reserve. This is a very expensive service.

On behalf of the South Milwaukee Public Library Board of Trustees and Staff I would like to wish all of you a very Happy Holiday.
Library holiday hours: Closed Monday, December 24 and Tuesday, December 25 and Monday, December 31 and Tuesday, January 1. The Library will reopen at 9:30 am on Wednesday, December 26 and January 2.

You now can pay your overdue fines and other charges by credit card on line. You need only to go to the CountyCat and sign in on your account. Just following the instructions. You can do this from home or at the terminals at the library. You can print out a receipt for your records. At the library the receipt is printed at the reference desk.
Need a tax deduction? The South Milwaukee Public Library Foundation, Inc. is a 501 C 3 tax exempt entity whose purpose is to raise funds for programming for children and adults as well as purchase materials for the library collection. All donations are tax deductible.

The Youth Room is sponsoring the Scholastic Book Fair starting on Thursday, November 30 through Saturday, December 8th. This Christmas give the gift of reading….give a book!
Santa will visit the South Milwaukee Library on Tuesday, December 4th when the Youth Room has its annual HOLIDAY FUN NIGHT. Miss Denise will tell stories, Santa will visit and their will be cookies.
The Thursday afternoon book club will meet on Thursday, December 13 at 1 PM. This month they will be reading books on Beatrix Potter. Need ideas for decorating or entertaining for the holidays? Check out the library’s collection of books on decorating the home or entertaining ides for the holidays. Be sure to check out the cookbooks on cookies!

Tickets are $20 per person and may be purchased at the TriCity National Bank, M&I Bank, the circulation desk at the library or at the door on the night of the tasting. Great time to meet your friends and neighbors and have an enjoyable evening, while tasting a wide variety; of wines. Music will be provided by the Garlic Mustard Pickers.

September is National Library Card Month! Do you have a card? Your card is the key to all of the collections and services in the Milwaukee County Federated Library System. Check out the South Milwaukee Library's web site for the many databases. One that will be of interest to everyone is the Learn A Test. This database has practice tests for AP courses, civil service tests and many more. Check it out. It's free!
October will be a very busy month at the Library.
Monday, October 1 the Friends will have their Monday morning book sale in the book cellar from 9:30-11.
The South Milwaukee Public Library Foundation, Inc. is having it's annual wine tasting on Friday evening, October 19 from 7:00-9:30 pm at the library, 1907 10th Avenue, South Milwaukee. Tickets are on sale at the circulation desk and the M&I Bank in South Milwaukee. Tickets are $20 per person. The Garlic Mustard Pickers music group will provide the entertainment. All donations are tax deductible. If anyone would like to donate an item for the raffle, please contact the Library Director at 768-8195. Funds that the Foundation have raised paid for the installation of the wireless system in the library as well as the four laptop computers that people can use withint the building. Funds have also paid for the online book club. Your support is appreciated.

Hope you all had a great summer! The Library was extremely busy. We had over 500 children sign up for the summer reading program and over 474 kids and parents attended the Wednesday afternoon programs. A very special thanks to the many businesses who donated money or coupons that we gave away to children who read at least 300 minutes or to the younger kids who had stories read to them that amounted to 250 minutes.
Hey parents! Be sure to sign up you children for story time, which begins on Tuesday, September 4th. We have one session at 10:30 on Tuesday morning and another at 1:30 on Tuesday afternoon. Call the Youth Room at 768-8195, ext. 3 to register.
Local children's author Janet Halfmann, whose new book "Little Skink's Tail", was just published, will present a program for children on Wednesday, September 19th at 3:30 in the Youth Room. She will read several stories, including her new book, do some craft programs and sign copies of her book, which will be available for sale.
The Friends of the Library will be holding their fall book sale on Saturday, September 8th from 9:30-3:00 PM.

"Get a Clue@Your Library" summer reading program was very successful. Over 470 children participated in the reading program and activities. While the program ends on July 27th, kids still can turn in their reading charts and get prizes until Saturday, August 4th.
The Friends of the Library have announced their 2008 book sale dates. The Saturday sales will be April 19th, September 20th and November 22nd. The sale starts at 9:30 and runs until 3 PM. The Monday Book Cellar sales will be January 7th, February 4th, March 3rd, May 5, June 2nd, August 11th, October 6th and December 1. The Monday sales run from 9;30 until 11.
The next Saturday book sale will be held on Saturday, September 8th from 9:30 until 3. The next Monday Book Cellar sale will be on August 13 from 9:30-11.
Look for the Library at the South Milwaukee Police Department's Night Out on August 16th.
The Library will be replacing the air conditioning units in the future with ones that are more efficient nest year.
We will be doing classes in fall on how to use the CountyCat. Watch for more information on the library's calendar.
Sign up for the fall story times begin on Monday August 20th. Story time will begin on Tuesday September 4th and run through Tuesday, October 9. Story times are 10:30 and 1:30. You can register by calling the Youth Room at 768-8195.
The Youth Room will once again be sponsoring the Scholastic Book Fair. The fair will be held from November 30th thru December 11th.
Mark you calendars for the South Milwaukee Public Library Foundation's annual wine tasting. This year the affair will be held on Friday, October 19th.
