South Milwaukee Public Library News for June

"Be creataive @ your library" summer reading program starts on Monday, June 15th.  The Youth Room has a great program lined up for the summer.  The program runs through Saturday, July 25th.  Kids are able to turn in their sheets to get credit through Saturday, August 1st.  For the Thursday programs parents need to sign up their children.  You may register in person or call 768-8195, ext.3.

June programs:

Monday, June 15th Monday stories at 1:30; Tuesday, June 16th the Midwest Twisters Gykmnastics at 10:30 am; Wednesday, June 17th see the animals from the Racine Zoo at 1:30 pm and on Thursday, June 18th we have crafty Thursdays.  We will do a recycle craft program at 10:30 am.

Monday, June 22nd Monday stories at 1:30; Tuesday, June 23rd a day in the life of a clown with Annette Loper; and Thursday, June 25th we will have our crafty Thursdays and make jewelry at 10:30 am.  There is a $2 materials charge.
Be sure to pick up a schedule of programs at the library or check out the June calendar on our web site at www.southmilwaukee.org/library.

Going on vacation?  Take along a traveling teddy.  They are now available for travel.

Starting on Saturday, June20th the Youth Room will close at 12 noon.  All of the other library hours will remain the same.

The Friends of the Library will be having their Monday morning book sale on May 4, 2009 from 9:30-11.  Great bargains!

On May 12th from 6 - 8 PM the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators, the South Milwaukee Public Library, and the South Milwaukee Public Schools will sponsor a program in celebration of children's book week.  The theme this year is "Dive Into Reading".  Parents and children are invited to meet children's authors and illustrators who bring children's books to life.  Meet authors Janet Halfmann who wrote "LITTLE SKINK"S TAIL and Gibbs Davis who wrote WACKIET WHITE HOUSE PETS.  Children's book illustrators include Carol Schwartz who illustrated FIREFLIES and Jeff Miracola who illustrated WELCOME TO MONSTER ISLE.  A fun evening of stories and artwork.  Children will be able to ask questions of the authors and illustrators.  Thre will be refreshments and prizes given away during the evening.  Everyone welcomed.  Registration NOT required.  Call 768-8195 for more information.

Time to start planning your vacation.  Check out the library's travel collection.

The library will be closed for Memorial Day weekend on Saturday, May 23 and Monday, May 25th.

  The Friends of the Library are having their spring book sale on Saturday, April 11, 2009 from 9:30 to 3.  Great bargains!

The Library will be closed on Friday, April 10th.  We will reopen on Saturday, April 11 from 9 am to 4 pm.

Culver's is sponsoring a drawing contest contest in celebration of National Library Week, April 12-18.  The theme is "worlds connect@Your Library"  The contest is open to  children 11 and under.    Children are encouraged to draw characters from a book they have enjoyed. Children may pick up their drawing sheets in the Youth Room of the library.  Every child who completes a darawing will receive a "Be our guest" coupon for a free single scoop of frozen custard from Culvers.  In addition their name will be entered into a random drawing to win additional prizes.  The contest will run from April 1 thru April 30, 

 Celebrate Natioal Library Week April 12 thru the 18th.  The Library Board is having their family fun night featuring Glen Gerard the magician.  The Library Board will be holding their ice cream social at the same time.  The events start at 6 pm and run until 7:45 pm.  Therre will also be crafts for the children as well.

Mark your calendar for Saturday, April 11, 2009!  The Friends of the Library are having their spring book sale from 9:30-3.  Great bargains!

National Library kWeek will be held April 12 - 18th.  Family fun night and ice cream social will be held on Tuesday, April 14th from 6 - 7:45 pm.  Entertainment and crafts for the children and ice cream for the everyone.

Time to start planning your vegetable and flower gardens.  Maybe you want to landscape the back yard.  Check out the library's collection of books on gardening and landscapping for ideas.

The library still has state and federal tax forms.  You may also access and print the forms by going to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue and the Internal Revenue Service web sites.

Need a notary?  The Library has three notaries on staff.  Be sure to call ahead to see if one is available.

The library will be offering Internet and E-Mail classes for the novice.  The class will be  2 1/2 hours long  and limited to 8 per session.  Advance registration is required.  People may sign up for the Tuesday, April 14 or Thursday, April 16th class.  Classes will be held from 1 - 3:30 pm.


 

South Milwaukee Library March happenings

The Friends of the Library will be holding their Monday morning book sale on Monday, March 2nd from 9:30-11.  Great bargains! 

Spring story time will begin on Tuesday, March 31st at 10:30 am.  Registration for story time will begin on Monday, March 16, 2009.  You may register in person or call 768-8195, ext 3.

The Thursday afternoon book club will meet on Thursday, March 12 at 1:00 PM.  Stop in and meet the members and find out what they are reading.  Great way to spend an afternoon talking about books.

First day of spring starts on March 20th.  Time to start planning your gardens.  Check out the library's collection of gardening books.  Oh, an by the way, Sunday, March 8th day light savings time starts.  Spring can't be too far away.

We are starting to plan our classes for March and April.  We will be doing classes on how to use the library online catalog and databases.  We will also do an internet training class.  Watch for the details.

South Milwaukee Public Library news for February 23, 2009

The library has state and federal tax forms available.  You can also access them from the library's website, www.southmilwaukee.org/library.  Click on to "reference links".  From there you can access the Internal Revenue and Wisconsin lDepartment of Revenue sites for downloable forms.  We do not have tax assistance available.

The South Milwaukee Amateur Radio Club has donated several books on amateur radio to the Library for their circulating collection.

The Potisk Chiropractic and Wellness Center will present a program on Monday, February 9th at 6:30 pm.  Dr. Drew Neville will present a program on "Natural approaches to the treatment and prevention of lower back pain".  The Doctor will be available for free personal consultation after the talk as time permits.  The program runs about 45 minutes and is free.  Call 768-8195, ext 2 to register.

The Library is selling the Christmas ornament featuring the old Carnegie library building.  The South Milwaukee Association of Commerce selects a historical site each year to feature on the ornament.  This year they are featuring the library in honor of the library's 110 anniversary.

A special thanks to  Barbara Vey and the romance and mystery writers who presented a great program on writing romance novels.  Check out the display of romance novels on the first floor.

Hey Kids!  Still time to register for the Milwaukee Bucks reading challenge.  You have until Monday, February 23rd to read 500 pages in order to win a voucher to a Milwaukee Bucks game.



 


 

South Milwaukee Public Library News notes

The Monday, January 12, 2009 program by Potisk Chiropractic and Wellness Center has been cancelled.

You can now pay your overdue fines and fees online through the couontycat.mcfls.org using MasterCard of Visa credit card of a check card.  Simply log onto any computer with an Internet connection and access your library card account.  Click on the Countycat link and you are ready to go.  It is convenient as this is available from any computer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Library is selling the Christmas ornament featuring the old Carnegie Library building.  The South Milwaukee Association of Commerce selects a historical site each year to feature on the ornament.  This year they are featuring the library in honor of the library’s 110th anniversary.

Don’t forget that the library has laptop computers available for use in the library.  You need a valid library card or Wisconsin driver’s license.  You may use the laptops for up to two hours.  Since the library has WiFi, you may also bring in your own laptop. Check out the book display on self defense and on writing novels.  The Library has a wide selection of books and video’s on these topics.

Don’t forget that the Library now has uniform opening hours Monday through Saturday.  The Library opens at 9 am Monday through Saturday.

If you reserve an item and you no longer need it, please call 768-8195, ext 2 to cancel the reserve. Many of these items have reserves.  Failure to call us if you now longer need the item results in other people having to wait longer. Failure to pick up a reserve item will result in a $1.00 charge.

The South Milwaukee Historical Society will be holding their dinner meeting on February 14 at the Knights of Columbus hall 732 Badger Avenue, South Milwaukee.  Cost is $20 per person.  Cocktails at 5:30 and dinner at 6:30.  Call 764-2118 for reservations.

The Friends of the South Milwaukee Public Library will be holding their Monday morning book sales on January 5, February 2, March 2, May 4, August 10, October 5 and December 7.  The sales run from 9:30 to 11 am.  The Saturday book sales will be held on April 11, September 19 and November 21 from 9:30 am to 3 pm.

Sign up for the winter story time begins on Monday, January 5.  People may register in person in the Youth Room or call 768-8195, ext. 3.  Story time begins on Tuesday, January 20 at 10:30 am.  Open to all residents.

Hey kids!  Join the Milwaukee Bucks Reading Challenge!  Kids in 4th through 10 grades are eligible.  You score a point for each page you read from a book.  Score 500 points and you will earn a voucher good for a Bucks home game either Friday, March 13th at 7:30 against the New Orleans Hornets or Saturday, March 21 at 7:30 against the Portland Trailblazers.  Read 750 pages and your name will be entered into a drawing for an official Milwaukee Bucks autographed basketball.  Sign up in the Youth Room.  Become an ALL STAR READER!  Program ends on Monday, February 23rd.

Mad Science will present the “Wacky Winter Science” program on Wednesday, January 14th at 4 pm at the South Milwaukee Public Library.  Call 768-8195, ext 3 to register or register in person.  Program is limited to 30 children.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Library Foundation’s wine tasting on October 17th.  It was very successful.  Mark your calendars for October 16, 2009 for their annual wine tasting.

The South Milwaukee Public Library Foundation would like to thank everyone who bid on the silent auction items.  A special thanks to everyone who donated items for the auction.

The fall story time will begin on Tuesday, November 11.  The story time is at 10:30 am.  Call 768-8195 ext. 3 to register or register in person in the youth room. Never too early to think about Christmas decorations, entertainment ideas or for those special gifts that can you make.  Check out the library collection of books for ideas to make the holidays special.

The Library will be closed on Thursday, November 27 for Thanksgiving and on Friday, November 28.  The Library will be open on Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm.

Happenings at the South Milwaukee Library

The South Milwaukee Public Library Foundation, Inc. is holding its annual wine tasting on Friday, October 17, 2008 fro 7 – 9:30 PM at the Library.  Tickets are $20 per person.  They are available at Parkway Floral, M&I Bank South Milwaukee, the circulation desk at the library.  Tickets may also be purchased at the door on Friday evening.

Stop in and put in your bid on items that are on display for the silent auction.  The auction will run through Friday, October 24th.  Bidding will close at 3 PM on the 24th.

The library will be holding its Halloween family fun night on Tuesday evening, October 21 from 6 PM to 7:45 PM.  See Glen the magician perform his Halloween magic show.  There will be crafts for the kids as well as cookies and punch.

Need costume ideas for Halloween.  Check out the library’s collection of books on costumes and Halloween party ideas.

 

South Milwaukee Library news

The library now has a new public black and white copier.  Funds for the copier were from the library’s gift fund.  We want to thank all of you who donate to the library.

Book memorials are a wonderful way to honor a friend for some special occasion or to remember a person who has passed away.  Book plates are placed in the book acknowledging the memorial donation.

 Join us on Tuesday, October 21 from 6 – 7:45 PM as we have our annual Halloween fun night.  We will have a magician who will perform his magic on children as well as face painting and crafts.  The Library Board will serve cookies and punch.  Children and adults are encouraged to come in costume!

The Friends will be holding their Monday morning book sale on October 6th from 9:30-11.  Lots of great bargains!  Thank you to everyone who has donated items for the book sale.  Items may be dropped off at the circulation desk during business hours.

The South Milwaukee Lions Club donated a magnifier reader to the library.  If you are having problems reading the small print, this reader will be of great help.  The reader is located in the reference area.

Day care centers are encouraged to contact the Youth Room to arrange for a visit to the library.  Call 768-8195, ext 3 to make arrangements.

The tickets for the South Milwaukee Public Library Foundations annual wine tasting party are available.  Cost is $20 per person.  The wine tasting will be held on Friday, October 17 from 7 - 9:30 pm.  Tickets may be purchased at the library, Parkway Floral, M&I Bank or at the door on the night of the event.

The Friends of the Library will be holding their fall book sale on Saturday, September 20, 2008 from 9:30-3.  Great selection of books and other materials.  If you wish to donate books, records, puzzles, etc. you may bring them into the library circulation desk.

The art gallery on the second floor has an interesting display of unique Wisconsin locale nature photography by Rozanne Cifaldi and the watercolor translation of the photography by Elizabeth Cifaldi.  The display will run from September 7 through
Tickets are now on sale at the Library, Parkway Floral and M&I Bank – South Milwaukee for the Library’s annual wine tasting, which will be held on Friday, October 17th from 7 – 9:30 pm.  Tickets are $20 per person.  Tickets will be available at the door as well.  There will also be a silent auction.  All funds raised support library activities.

Library happenings in August

 Summer is almost over.  Children will be going back to school shortly.  Check out the library’s book display on the firs floor on preparing your child for school.

In honor of the Harley Davidson 105th anniversary, we have prepared a book display of books on Harley Davidson.  Very interesting reading!

Congratulations to the 515 children who participated in the 2008 summer reading program.  Miss Denise will post the top readers from each school in the Youth Room.

The fall story time will start on Tuesday, September 2.  Story time will be at 10:30 pm.  You may start to register children on Monday, August 18 either in person or call 768-8195, ext 3.

We will be having a special program featuring the Mad Science group on Wednesday afternoon, September 17 from 4-5 pm.  Kids will learn how to make polymers.  Registration is required since the class is limited to 30.  People who register and do not show up, unless they call and cancel, will be assed a $2.00 fee.

Color copies are only 50 cents.  Our copier makes great copies of photographs.
 We are looking for presenters for our fall adult programs.  Have a hobby that you would like to share with us, call the Library Director at 768-8195.

July Library happenings

NEW:  The library will be closed on Saturday, July 26, 2008.  Materials may be retuned in the book drop located to the north of the main entrance. 

The library is open during road construction.  Park in the city lot next to the library or on the side street.

Hey Kids! There is still time to join the reading club.  For the readers, read 300 minutes and you get prizes and a book.  For the younger children, if you are read to for 250 minutes you can get prizes and a book.  The program ends on Saturday, July 26th.  However, you can still turn in your sheets and be eligible for prizes until Saturday, August 2.

September is library card sign up month.  Library cards are free and it only takes a few minutes to register for a card.  You need two pieces of identification, one of which has your current address.  Stop in and check us out!

Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children.  Studies show that children who are read to in the home, or who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime continuing education.   For adults the library is a source for continuing life long learning.

We are looking for people from the community who would like to present programs at the library.  Call the Library Director at 768-8195 if you are interested in sharing your hobby with the library.

 

The library has a number of books that were donated to the library over the years that we would like to sell on E-Bay.  We are looking for volunteers who would be willing to enter them on E-Bay.  If you are interested, please call the Library Director at 768-8195. 


 


 

Summer time at the South Milwaukee Library

Yes, summer time is here.  Road construction is taking place in front of the library.  We are open for business.  There is ample parking in the lot or the side streets.

Summer is a time for grilling outdoors.  Check out our display on barbecuing.  Some of the titles you will find include The Great BBQ Sauce Book, The Barbecue Bible with over 500 Recipes, The Tailgater’s Cookbook, and The New Grilling Book.

Hey Kids!  Have you signed up for the summer reading program?  There is still time to “Catch the Reading Bug”.  Lots of good prizes and programs.

With the cost of magazine subscriptions going up, why not check out the library’s collection of magazines.  They circulate for one week.  We have over 200 magazines to choose from.

Have a hobby that you might want to share with others?  We are working on programs for the fall/winter.  If you would like to do a program call the Library Director.  We will do all of the publicity.

With the high cost of gas, you may want to stay close to home. Check out the library’s collection on summer recreation ideas.

My how time flies.  Summer is almost here.  Time to start getting the yard in shape and planning those family picnics.  Check out the library’s collection of gardening and cook books.

“Catch the Reading Bug” is the theme for the 2008 reading program.  Be sure to pick up a brochure at the library that lists all of the fun things kids can do this summer.  The program begins on Monday June 16 and runs through Saturday, July 26th.  There is also a listing of the programs on the library’s calendar of events on the website, www.southmilwaukee.org/library.

The summer hours of the library begin on Monday, June 16.  The hours will remain the same as in  the winter except that the Youth Room will close at noon on Saturdays. The Library will be closed on Friday, July 4th and will reopen on Saturday, July 5.

The Youth Room is looking for volunteers to help with the reading program.  If you are interested in volunteering you should call Miss Denise at 768-8195 ext 3.

Interested in joining a book discussion group?  Stop in the second Thursday of each month at 1 pm for a stimulating book discussion.  Check with the adult reference desk to see what book they are reading that month.
